Evans

EVANS - G & S

This engine has an Evans four-cycle cylinder on a “box bed” Gibbs and Sterrett frame made in Corry, PA in the 1880s.  Conversion was more complex requiring timing gears, an additional Evans flywheel, and an Evans clutch.  Note the huge 24 x 24 inch hand hewn timber it is on.  It pumped an oil well near Chicora.

South Penn

SOUTH PENN -

OIL CITY BOILER WORKS

This cylinder, made in S. Penn’s Clarksburg, WV shops can run on either gas as a two-cycle or steam.  These were known as convertible engines.  It was used in West Virginia.

Gardner

GARDNER - AJAX

This is another convertible cylinder able to run on either gas or steam.  It was made by Gardner of Washington, PA, and it is mounted on an Ajax steam engine frame from Corry, PA.  The convertible engines were very popular in SW PA and this one was used in that field near Washington, PA.

Palm

PALM - AJAX

This unique engine has a four-cycle convertible cylinder that was made by Palm of Butler, PA.  It is mounted on an Ajax frame.  This engine was advertised to run on gas, steam or both at the same time.  Looks complicated to run on both.  It was used near East Brady, PA.
